Letter from Costas Zepos
Ambassador ret.- former Chairman of the board of the “Cycle of Patmos”
We were classmates with Maria Becket at the “Makri” gymnasium. With the passing of years our friendship deepened and flourished . I soon discovered that behind an enigmatic posture were concealed the warmth of a generous character, the strength of a determined will, the sharpness of a genuine culture and intelligence. However, what could not be concealed was her devotion to the causes she adopted and pursued persistently until the end, until her efforts had brought sufficient results. The causes she adopted were noble. They reflected the concerns of generations involved in the defense of human rights and the protection of the environment.
By character a discreet person Maria avoided undue publicity of her activities. Not everything is known of her invaluable initiatives to mobilize the Scandinavian countries and the Netherlands to take action before the Council of Europe in the face of severe breeches of human rights committed by the Greek military junta. And of her later contribution to mobilize on a wide international scale churches of all denominations, in the frame of international symposia under the aegis of the Ecumenical Patriarch, to take action for the protection of the environment, in particular of water resources. In her own personal and unselfish manner she served some of the best interests of Hellenism, whether in regard to respect of human rights or by assisting the orthodox church give greater emphasis on the universal need of protection of the environment.
Her deeds and accomplishments can be traced among other sources in James Becket’s book “Barbarism in Greece” (Walker & Co. New York 1970, and in the Greek “Pontiki” edition, 1997). As regards the environment, in existing editions of the “Religion, Science and the Environment” books and documents.
My wife Greta, who as myself was at times involved in the main activities of Maria Becket, joins me in presenting to her husband James Becket and her daughters Sandra and Daphne our deepest condolences.

Dear Daphne and Sandra,
It is with deep sorrow that I received the message of the death of your mother and I wish to express my participation in your sorrow. She was a hero and a model for all freedom loving people. Had she governed Greece we would have seen a very different country. I agree with Maria in her saying about her grandmother that a human being does not die as long as some people remember and talk about her.
Everyone who met your mother will remember her and we will continue to talk and write about her.
Cordially yours

Chère Daphné ;
The passing of my dear friend Maria Becket.
Dear Maria, on this Thanksgiving day, I am filled with gratitude that life put you on my path. You believed in me and inspired me to go to Oxford University rather than waste my talents taking drugs.
You also served to help me take the full measure of the terrible injustice served upon the Palestinian people. You had friends on both sides of this divide and also alerted me to the importance of wholeheartedly supporting the Israeli peace movement.
I loved you deeply and imperfectly too and I have nothing but gratitude for your role in my life and that of all those you touched near or far. Your heart was pure and if honest history is ever written you will be honored as one of 'les justes', the righteous ones.♥

My dearest Daphne and Sandra,
Just to say once again that I really feel lucky to have met your mother and will cherish all the so many good moments, the laughs and the stories, so many good memories over the last 15 years. I am sorry I will not be able to attend the memorial service tomorrow, in a way I prefer to think of her adventuring in a far away country , pulling along her pi – as she did in April when I last saw her in London, the super mobile granny, as she called herself– and having the mental and physical energy of all of us together!
I know you will miss her a lot, the pain of losing a parent never really goes... my deepest condolences!
